Solar Panels in Bima: Cost + Payback

Solar for homes in Bima (East Sumbawa, NTB): real Rp cost, 5.7-6.0 PSH (highest in Indonesia), payback 3-5 years on Rp 1-1.5 million bills.

Bima, on the eastern half of Sumbawa, has one of the highest irradiance levels in Indonesia (5.7 to 6.0 kWh per square meter per day) thanks to its very dry savanna climate. For context: that's roughly 20% higher than Surabaya and 30% higher than Bandung. The same panel produces more electricity here, and payback is shorter. From a pure physics standpoint, Bima is one of the most solar-friendly residential locations in Indonesia.

The main reason isn't only savings, it's energy control over your own home. When PLN rates rise or the NTB grid stutters, your home doesn't take the full hit. The neighborhoods most likely to fit are Mpunda, Raba, Asakota, Rasanae Barat, and Rasanae Timur. Whether it fits your home specifically is what we'll work out together.

TL;DR

  • Highest PSH in Indonesia: Bima irradiance 5.7 to 6.0 kWh per square meter per day, panel output about 20% higher than Java.
  • Independence level: 2.5 kWp panels in Bima cover roughly 75% of a 2200 VA home with a Rp 1.2 million bill. The rest still comes from PLN, but you're no longer fully exposed to the tariff.
  • Common system: 2 to 5 kWp grid-tied hybrid, with panels, inverter, mounting, install, and warranty included. Battery optional for blackout backup.
  • Climate: dry savanna, very long dry season (April to November). One of the driest regions in Indonesia.
  • Investment: Rp 28 to 75 million range, depending on system size. Payback 3 to 5 years on a Rp 1 to 1.5 million bill, then near-free electricity for another 20 years.
  • Doesn't fit if: bill under Rp 800,000 per month, heavy roof shading, or you plan to move within 5 years.

Solar panel cost in Bima, real numbers April 2026

The rough range we see from installer quotes in the Bima area as of April 2026:

System Fits a bill of Complete package price Includes
2 kWp grid-tied Rp 800,000 to 1.2 million Rp 28 to 35 million Panels, inverter, mounting, install, 25-yr panel + 5-yr inverter warranty
2.5 kWp grid-tied Rp 1 to 1.5 million Rp 35 to 45 million Same
3.5 kWp grid-tied Rp 1.5 to 2 million Rp 50 to 60 million Same
5 kWp grid-tied Rp 2 to 3 million Rp 60 to 75 million Same
5 kWp hybrid (+5 kWh battery) Same, plus blackout backup Rp 90 to 110 million Plus battery storage

Note: Bima requires extra transport from Lombok via ferry plus overland Sumbawa, or direct via Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin Airport. The technician transport plus equipment cost is calculated at survey. The range stays wide because it depends on panel and inverter brands (Jinko vs Canadian vs LONGi, Sungrow vs Huawei vs Deye), roof condition, and the run distance from panels to the meter.

What to watch for in any installer quote:

  • Panel and inverter brand specified, or "or equivalent"? A clear spec means a serious installer.
  • Product warranty vs installation warranty. Panels are 25 years standard, inverters 5 to 10 years. Installation warranty should be 2 to 5 years.
  • ESDM or SLO certification. Required for any grid-tied system that exports back to PLN.

Investment vs PLN dependency, the rough math

Independence isn't free. But the math also isn't as scary as most people assume. Assumptions we use (April 2026):

  • R-1 tariff for 1300 to 2200 VA: Rp 1,444 per kWh
  • R-1 tariff for 3500 to 5500 VA: Rp 1,699.53 per kWh
  • Bima irradiance: about 5.85 kWh per square meter per day on average
  • 1 kWp output in Bima: 140 to 150 kWh per month (the highest in our city set)

For a 2200 VA home with a Rp 1.2 million monthly bill, installing 2.5 kWp:

  • Monthly output: 2.5 kWp times 145 kWh = 363 kWh
  • Covers about 75% of your home's electricity: 363 kWh times Rp 1,444 = around Rp 524,000 per month no longer flowing to PLN
  • Per year: about Rp 6.3 million that used to be your installment to PLN, now staying in your home
  • Investment: about Rp 40 million
  • Payback: 40 million / 6.3 million = about 6.3 years (conservative). The remaining 18 years produce your own near-free electricity.

If your daytime use is high (working from home, daytime AC, induction cooking), coverage can hit 85 to 95% and payback drops to 3.5 to 4.5 years. That's the shortest payback in Indonesia, simply because Bima's PSH is the highest. What you're buying isn't only savings, it's durable independence: 25 years of your home being far less exposed to PLN tariff hikes, rupiah swings, and short-term blackouts.

Does Bima fit? Climate, roof, availability

Climate: very strong fit, possibly the strongest in Indonesia. Bima irradiance averages 5.7 to 6.0 kWh per square meter per day year-round. The dry season (April to November) is long and very dry (savanna), and panels produce at maximum. The wet season (December to March) is short, still productive but down about 15% from peak.

Roof: ideally facing north (Bima is in the southern hemisphere), with a 10 to 30 degree pitch. East or west still works, output drops about 10 to 15%.

Shading: check tall trees, neighboring buildings, or water towers casting shade on the roof between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bima is relatively open, so shading is usually not a big issue.

Installer: our partner technician team covers all of Indonesia including Nusa Tenggara, with experience across varied residential roof conditions. For specific locations in Sumbawa or Flores, transport is calculated at survey.

When solar doesn't fit you yet

Independence is good, but it doesn't fit everyone right now. Four situations where we'd recommend waiting:

  • Your PLN bill is under Rp 800,000 per month: your dependency on PLN is already small. Audit your usage first; you might need efficiency upgrades more than rooftop solar.
  • Heavy roof shading: output drops a lot, and the energy control you're buying ends up half-baked. Better to wait until you can trim trees or address roof position.
  • Plan to move within 5 years: the investment hasn't paid back by the time you leave, and the independence isn't easy to relocate.
  • What you actually need is blackout backup, not long-term control: grid-tied solar doesn't back you up during a PLN outage. Hybrid (solar plus battery) or a generator is more appropriate if blackout coverage is the priority.

Frequently asked questions

A rough estimate is Rp 35 to 45 million for a 2.5 kWp grid-tied package (panels, inverter, mounting, installation, warranty). Transport to East Sumbawa is calculated at survey because of the ferry crossing from Lombok. Payback runs 3 to 5 years on a Rp 1 to 1.5 million monthly bill, faster than Java because Bima's PSH is the highest in Indonesia.
